CAPS/Fogarty International Traineeship in AIDS Prevention Studies (ITAPS) Program

The International Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies (I-TAPS) Program, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Fogarty International Center, and private donors, has been training scientists from low- and middle-income countries in AIDS prevention research since 1988. Ten to 12 applicants are selected each year to train with UCSF scientists at Global Health Sciences (GHS) and with CAPS scientists. During the 6-week intensive short-course, each visiting scientist develops a protocol for a specific AIDS prevention–related research project to be carried out in his or her home country. Upon completion of data collection, the trainee may return to GHS/CAPS for a course in scientific writing, during which data analysis is completed and a manuscript is written for submission to the peer-reviewed literature.
