Jay Newberry, MSSW, has worked with Dr. Steve Morin and the AIDS Policy Research Center (APRC) since coming to CAPS in 2000. Initially, the APRC consisted of 1 faculty member, 2 academic specialists, and two staff members. In 2007, there are now 5 faculty, 3 academic specialists, and over 10 staff members. He manages project development, staffing, finances, and strategic planning across all of the Policy Center’s projects. He is also responsible for maintaining the APRC’s internship program, which provides policy research experience for graduate students.
Prior to coming to San Francisco, Jay was a licensed clinical social worker in Texas. From 1989 to 1999 he worked in HIV services in Dallas ranging from case management at the AIDS ARMS Network, LGBT and HIV mental health counseling at Oak Lawn Community Services, and for a home health care clinic specializing in end-of-life care for people diagnosed with AIDS. He has taught continuing education classes on lesbian, gay, and bisexual mental health, as well as HIV and mental health. Eventually, he became a leader for the Dallas chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, serving on their HIV Concerns Committee and producing the chapter’s newsletter. He is a gay man and has been HIV+ for over 8 years.
